Matthew Goode – Video Interview

Prepare yourself, foreign genre film fanatics, because director Park Chan-wook of Oldboy fame has finally made the leap over to our shores with his first English language film, the creepy erotic thriller, Stoker, starring Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode and Nicole Kidman.

Wasikowska plays India Stoker, a teenage girl whose father died in a horrible car accident leaving her alone with her unstable mother (Kidman), when her uncle Charlie shows up and things start getting progressively worse. And that’s where Matthew Goode comes into the picture.

The clean-cut British actor has been appearing in movies on these shores for many years and he’s probably best known for playing Ozymandias in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, but he hasn’t really played a character like Charlie Stoker, and much of that comes down to the unconventional casting by Chan-wook.

Earlier this week, ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke with Goode about the experience working with a visionary like Chan-wook and what that entailed, working with Mia Wasikowska and filming a sequence that could only be dubbed “piano sex,” using his looks and charm in a new way as the menacing Charlie and a lot more. Check out the full video interview by clicking here!

Stoker opens in New York and Los Angeles today (Friday, March 1st) and in other cities over the coming month.

Matthew Goode on Nicole Kidman and Keeping his Clothes On

The Herald Scotland recently interviewed Matthew Goode, and it’s another great, long article. Filled with quotes on his career and life – he and his partner, Sophie, are apparently expecting another child – there’s great insight on Matthew as an actor. He talks about the fear of finding jobs and is brutally honest about his prospects as 50 Shades‘ Christian Grey. His end quote is worth checking out, too, for those seeking a bit of inspiration to get cracking on something.

If he was a character from children’s literature – come on, you must have played that game: Bradley Cooper could be the Cheshire Cat, Tom Cruise is Popeye, Tom Hanks is maybe Toad of Toad Hall and Daniel Radcliffe is, well, Harry Potter (sorry Daniel) – then Matthew Goode would definitely be Tigger.

Even in the shortest of audiences in London’s bright and spangly Soho Hotel he’s bouncy, bouncy, bouncy and bouncy. And mostly fun, fun, fun and fun.

This Tuesday afternoon he springs up before I’m even in the room, hallooos my name – “Teddy!” – and spends our time together giving a very good impression of a man in his element. Obviously I like to think that’s the natural effect I have on people. But maybe it’s just his demeanour.

Goode is very tall, slightly sweary (be warned), rather English (so more AA Milne than Disney) and at the moment slightly ubiquitous. For the past few weeks he’s been on the small screen in Stephen Poliakoff’s sumptuously dressed and very long BBC Two drama, “Dancing On The Edge.” And as it comes to a close he is about to pop up in our cinemas as Mia Wasikowska’s rather nasty Uncle Charlie in Park Chan-wook’s American debut Stoker. After years in which he has been on a steadily upward trajectory, the 34-year-old would appear to have reached the point of ubiquity.

He’s not so sure, though. “I’m still like, ‘I wonder when I’m going to work again,’” he says as he sips bottled water and smooths down his skinny tie. “I’m pretty removed now. We live down in Kent, away from everything, and my day-to-day is: get up, take the missus to the station and then potter around with [four-year-old daughter] Matilda until its nursery time and then spend the afternoon thinking, ‘When am I going to work next? What are my options?’ I’ve spent a lot of time over the past four or five months doing that. So, Christ, I really hope this “Dancing On The Edge”/Stoker sandwich does bring something to the table.”

Matthew Covers L’Officiel Hommes (SS 2013)

Matthew Goode is on the cover of the spring/summer 2013 issue of L’Officiel Hommes. They’re apparently known for really great spreads, so hopefully fans will get a great new photo shoot out of it. I’ll try to obtain scans and post them ASAP. In the meantime, you may want to be on the lookout for the magazine yourself. Let me know if you have any luck finding a copy!

‘Stoker’ Clip – The Sheriff Comes Calling

Here’s an excellent clip from the upcoming film, Stoker, featuring Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode. At just over two minutes, audiences can see the chemistry between the two as they team up when speaking to an officer, questioning India about a missing person. It’s a delightfully tense little clip. Check it out! There’s also one new film still (featuring the same characters) added to the gallery.

“No One Knows Who I Am. I Don’t Even Know Who I Am,” Says Matthew

The Independent has posted a great new article on Matthew Goode, profiling him not only as an actor (they touch upon his roles in “Dancing on the Edge” and “Stoker”) but him as a human being. By the sounds of it, even a wildly talented man such as Matthew can have crippling self-doubt. Still, he maintains his charm throughout. Check out an excerpt below before heading to the source for more:

This month saw the return to our screens of British television giant Stephen Poliakoff, with “Dancing on the Edge,” about a black jazz band making their way into upper-crust society during the 1930s. Poliakoff chose to lead his typically impressive cast for this five-part drama with one Matthew Goode. A long-limbed Englishman, he brings an easy jocularity to the role of the young, ambitious, music journalist, Stanley Mitchell, all twinkling eyes, hands-in-pockets insouciance, and an irresistible smile, turned up at the edges so it’s almost, nearly, a smirk.

Poliakoff – a playwright and filmmaker, but most famous for TV dramas such as “The Lost Prince” and “Shooting the Past” – had pegged Goode for the role before they met. But good luck convincing Goode that he’d be anyone’s first choice, for anything.

“He wrote this brilliant character which he said he had only me in mind for – I don’t know whether he’s lying,” says the 34-year-old, with jolly self-deprecation. A fan of Poliakoff’s output, he considered working with him a “rite of passage” for an English actor. “I’d seen the photograph of the sort of slightly mad professor and I just thought it’d be fantastic to go and see him… I found out the next day he wanted me to do it. I was like, that’s quick! It was from the ridiculous to the sublime.”

‘Stoker’ Featurette – Characters

Here’s a new featurette for Stoker, highlighting the various characters in the film. Along with Matthew Goode, Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, and Jacki Weaver all talk about what to expect from their roles — and even the interaction between each other. There’s some new footage throughout the video, and it’s interesting regardless, so definitely check it out. Stoker hits theaters March 1st.
